Peeps on The Streeet: Jeffery on Broadway

When I saw Jeffery on the street downtown, I knew he would make an interesting subject, and I was right! I loved the way he added a tie and hat to his otherwise casual outfit - the accessories give his look a little something extra, don't you think?

Shirt - vintage
Tie - vintage
Shoes- vintage
Bag - obtained for free on the street. Score!

Tear Sheet: Jak & Jil Blog

Whoa! Some of you may already be aware of Jak & Jil, an awesome blog with photographs shot by Tommy Ton, aka "the best style paparazzi out there".  His photographs are amazing - the images are often cropped, and by leaving something out of the picture, we are left just wanting more. This blog is like crack to fashion fans, so don't say we didn't warn you!

The blog has been updated recently with shots taken at London Fashion Week, and the clothes and accessories are seriously fierce. Check it out - it's intense.

Peeps on The Streeet: Julia and Sarah on Stanton Street

I met Julia and Sarah on Stanton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, when they were on their way to purchase a couch from Craigslist. I loved the use of pattern in both their ensembles, and thought they looked especially cute together.

Tear Sheet: NY Women of Style Museum Exhibit

"Notorious and Notable: 20th Century Women of Style" is the boring name of an awesome exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York, running now through January 3rd. The exhibit features "80 prominent New York women who used their style, talent, or wealth to capture the attention of society and the media."

The show is organized with the clothing and jewelry displayed on mannequins along a mock runway so visitors can see garments up close. A diverse cross-section of famous New York women are represented including: Jacqueline Kennedy Onnassis, Isadora Duncan, and Barbara Walters. While it is unlikely that famous old-school socialite Mrs. Cornelius Whitney Vanderbilt would have ever been in the same room with stripper Gypsy Rose Lee during their lifetimes, the former clothing of both women get to mingle at this exhibit - Ms. Gypsy Rose must be turning over in her grave !

Highlights include Diana Vreelands fish-shaped cigarette lighter, a crazy gown worn by Louise Nevelson, and the little number on the left, worn by Lauren Bacall in 1963. You can see more images from the show here.

Peeps on The Street: Jackson on lower Broadway

When I spotted Jackson in downtown Manhattan on a recent Saturday, I thought his outfit was a perfect combination of weekend comfort and casual chic. Don't you wish more young guys dressed this way? Jackson works as a nurse at an animal hospital ( awww! ) and lives nearby, on Bleeker Street.

Shirt: Zara
Jeans: He forgets where he got them, but the brand is Cheap Monday
Shoes: Sperry

Is there any particular item you are shopping for right now?

Tear Sheet: I love Stacy London

Time Out New York has won me over this week, for reals. The magazine has a great piece in print and on their website featuring Stacy London, host of What Not To Wear, cofounder of styleforhire.comand Brooklyn resident.

We get to view twenty-five pictures of what are supposedly actual articles of Stacy's clothing and accessories, and this stuff is pretty fierce. Shopping information is included so you can track the stuff down.

In the accompanying article we learn “Anything and everything inspires my style; I appreciate beauty and design and find it everywhere" When asked about her favorite stores, Stacy names Albertine, Eva Gentry, and Bird, as well as mainstays such as Ann Taylor, J.Crew, BCBG and Club Monaco. Intrigued? Check it out here.

Peeps on The Street: Bill on Driggs and N. 9th St

Bill is a musician I met on Driggs in Williamsburg, and immediately wanted to talk to him about his look. He was a little shy, but agreed to answer my questions anyway.

Where did you get what you are wearing today?
T shirt: This is his friends band, and he got it at their show
Jeans: Second hand
Sneakers: Vans
Bandana: Probably from the dollar store

Is there any particular item you are shopping for right now?
Bill says he isn't shopping much, because he is too broke. If he wasn't, he'd be looking for new jeans and dress shoes.

What are your favorite stores?
Again, Bill reminds me that he's pretty broke right now. Unfortunately, our culture just doesn't reward musicians with much financial love, but if Bill were to shop, it would be at Buffalo Exchange, Beacon's Closet, or thrift stores.

Can you describe your personal style?
Like many people, Bill struggles with this one for a moment...he says he's kinda punk, so I suggest "Punk Ass Broke" and he agrees to that.

Tear Sheet: Peeps at Fashion's Night Out

Ok, so we admit we could be biased, but we can't hide our disappointment in this piece from New York Magazine. They are presently running a slideshow, featuring those whom they have crowned "The Eighteen Most Fashionable People at Fashion's Night Out: The Show".

While most of these peeps look just fine (our favorite is shown at left), we find it hard to believe that these pictures represent the "most fashionable" attendees at this event. We know our fellow New Yorkers have a lot more talent and originality than shown here, and suspect either laziness or a rapidly approaching deadline.

Do you agree? Check it out here

Peeps on The Street: Desira Pesta on North 11th Street, Williamsburg

Desira Pesta is a fashion designer, costume creator, and actress who lives in Brooklyn. Ironically, she says the ensemble she is rocking on this particular day is not one of her best; she makes most of her own clothes but I happened to catch her on laundry day...and we all know what that means in terms of outfit selection. I think she looks adorable anyway, so we decided to have a little chat.

Where did you get what you are wearing today?
Overalls: American Apparel
T-shirt: The Gap
Shoes: Vintage

Is there any particular item you are shopping for right now?
Desira wants a great fitting coat thats flattering, while still having enough coverage to be warm. She intends to design one and make it herself.

What are your favorite stores?
Oak NYC, Thrift and vintage stores. Since Desira makes most of her own clothes, she doesn't shop as much as most people.

Can you describe your personal style?
Tomboyish with elements of femininity.

If you really want to see something cool, check out Desira's website at www.desirapesta.com !

Tear Sheet: Fall 2010 Buyers' Guide

Style.com has an interesting slideshow on their website today, in which they poll the fashion directors of such bastions of style as Barneys New York, Jeffrey, Bergdorf Goodman, and Browns in London, on the essential pieces you need to have for the coming season. There are 90 pieces of clothing, accessories, and jewelry featured, and be warned: you will be tempted.

As a recap, we learn that this is to be a season of coats, we can expect a "return to sartorial sensibilities" (look it up), and as usual for fall, you need new boots. Recurrent themes are similar to what we've been seeing everywhere: fur, leopard print (its a neutral, FYI), and camel coats.

We happen to be partial to the fringed Loomstate dress shown here, which at $175, is also the cheapest thing we could find. What do you think? Check it out here.

Peeps on The Street: Joanna on Lorimer Street, Brooklyn

Joanna is a Pilates Instructor and lives in Williamsburg. When she isn't engaging her core, she is engaging her sense of adventure by traveling all over the world ( and picking up some pretty cool clothes and accessories while she's at it )

Where did you get what you are wearing today?
Dress: a "cheap store" on Broadway, in Manhattan
Sandals: Picked up in Brazil for $10
Hat: Italy
Purse: vintage store, about 5 years ago
Sunglasses: Portugal

Is there any particular item you are shopping for right now?
Joanna is on the lookout for some really cool boots that are good for winter

What are your favorite stores?
Joanna loves what she describes as "cheapy stores". She mentions that with time and patience, she is often able to find great stuff at stores like TJ Maxx. She also likes little Mom and Pop stores and Zara.
Joanna says that while she would love to invest in some really great quality clothing, she would rather use the money to support her travel habit.

Can you describe your personal style?
She doesn't know, but offers that someone once described her as "Gypsy meets Hippie"

Tear Sheet: Lanvin for H&M ? OMG!!!

Rumor has it that It is now confirmed that the French brand Lanvin will be the next designer "collaboration" to hit H&M. We heard it from Fashionista.com, who heard it from WWD, who quotes official sounding "market sources". The collection will hit stores in early November, which means we can expect the frugalista crowd to start camping out around Halloween.

Previous flings between high end designers and this chain have had varying degrees of success, at least in our humble opinion.  Karl Lagerfeld, and Stella McCartney, which sold out in a matter of hours, were well received, but the offerings in more recent seasons have been underwhelming. Here's hoping Lanvin can turn this around.

Our prediction? Long lines and lots of leopard print. So, will you risk life and limb to pick up a Lanvin at this price point?

Update: H&M has confirmed this news via a press release. The collection, for both women and men, will hit the stores on November 23rd.

Peeps on The Street: Phillip Gomez outside the Williamsburg Buffalo Exchange

Why, oh why, did the photo of this cool outfit have to come out blurry? Phillip is a professional stylist for Uniqlo, and can put together a pretty killer look on his day off, too.  We met shortly after he had completed a successful shopping trip to Buffalo Exchange, where he scored an awesome military trench, and a pair of amazing harem-style tuxedo pants.

Where did you get what you are wearing today?
Pants: Uniqlo ( and for only $9.99 ! )
T shirt: Alexander Wang
Plaid button down: Buffalo Exchange, in Phoenix AZ. The shirt came as a set with a tie made out of the same material, and he sometimes wears them together to dress it up.
Shoes: Aldo
Bracelet: YSL
Belt: Jill Sander for Uniqlo

Is there any particular item you are shopping for right now?
Phillip is shopping for transitional items for the fall, and is always on the lookout for one of a kind pieces. He says he doesn't think in terms of "outfits", but rather individual pieces that can be combined in different ways.

What are your favorite stores?
Buffalo Exchange, Uniqlo, Marc Jacobs Accessories, and any store that has "a little bit of everything"

Can you describe your personal style?
eclectic, fun, and unexpected

You can check out Phillip's work at http://styledbyphil.shutterfly.com/
